Scrapers What is a scraper and should I be concerned?
In a nut shell this is when you on your site have valuable rich
content & information, The "scrapers" then copy your information
from your website.
Used for Advertising Sites - Some of the content
from scrapped sites are used for and post it to a website that features
a lot of PPC or
pay
per click
ads. They
will
most likely
have
a highly
targeted
page
with
just
information about that particular topic to drive its rankings to
the top of the organic search field with the hopes of driving their
PPC
revenue.
While there are many good sites that use PPC ads on their site for
additional revenue streams, it is really easy to tell if a site is
just about the click revenue or actually providing information which
you
or your customers are looking for.
If you find you have been scrapped
for this purpose (ppc revenue), you can notify their hosting company,
if they are featuring adsence, or major affiliate services, you can
notify
them
as well as to your content being scraped, and they will more than
likely, remove their ad's from the violators website. This would then
discourage
them from using scraped content because once caught, their revenue
stream could be adversely affected by major players cutting off their
revenue sources.
Why it should concern you or businesses: not only is their
the potential for having your content and materials
scraped/
and used with out permission, this sort of behavior can dilute your
market presence, they could re purpose your information for their own
benefit or services, they can also copy your propriety information,
and store the information in
a database
for other not so nice activities,
If you fall victim to this there are a few precautions that you
should take:
- Post your website terms and conditions specifically prohibit unauthorized
access or downloading of data using any computer program
- clearly identify the terms and conditions of use on each web page
containing valuable data or provide an obvious link to a web page
- utilize your meta tags, robot.txt files to help you deter these
activities

Link Building Tips
Think like a user when building links. When creating links make
your link exchanges look like they are acquired the natural way.
Place
your links in relevant to your content where search
engine expect them to be in the page copy
or in a sidebar possibly or place them pointing to pages
that is also
relevant to your topic. Do not stuff your link with keywords.
Think about why you are linking to the sites you like. Is it that
the site provides online tools, interesting information or tutorials?
Use the reason why you would link to someone, and apply that reasoning
to your own website to attract links.
Linking DO's
-
Read and analyze the sites you are requesting links from, are
they relevant or complementary to your product, service or information.
-
If there is a fee involved, know the difference between a paid
inclusion vs. a bought link. Paid inclusion is ok as long as the
site contains rich information in relation to your topic subject
and is not only a site that is run for purposes of linking ( link
farm)
-
Make your purpose of link placement as a way to acquire a lead
or sale, think of it as a advertising click.
-
Focus on quality information and content, search engines love
this and so do webmasters and they will & do seek out quality links
from information rich sites.
-
When placing a out bound or in bound link, think about the actual
link text, for outbound links, does the link text fall naturally
into body content. Is the link text relative to where it is landing.
Example: Joe's racing bike seats provide comfort for long rides..."
where racing bike seats would be the link - when clicked it
goes to a page about bike racing, or about that particular product,
or
a testimonial about the bike seat, etc.
-
Make your own relative link network - for example, you are
a wedding planner, you set up a link to your caterer, the caterer
on its page provides a link to the venue's in which it has worked,
in turn the venue on its special events or wedding page places a
link to you as a preferred wedding cord. etc. This kind of linking
works - they are all relative or complementary to each other.
-
Allow customers to bookmark you.
Linking Don'ts
-
Avoid link farms, sites that look like ppc link only sites, with
minimal information. They can ban your site if they found
you responsible for boosting your rankings, but you can always
submit reinclusion.
-
Forget about reciprocal links - basically they almost now carry
no weight and even though they might be relative, they in theory
cancel each other out.
-
Do not participate in three-way or similar
linking schemes - Search engines such as google have very sophisticated
systems, and they have the ability to figure these methods out and
could land you in the penalty box.
Mind you I am not saying that you should not for example set up a
three way link yourself to relevant sources. (see above linking do's)
-
Don't obsess about backlinks (links pointing at you) focus on
quality information / content.
-
Don't use the same link text in all link placements - make each
unique relative to its content or focus.
The above is a few of the points to consider when
utilizing linking as one of your elements in your drive for site rankings.
There are
many other options and methods for link building or popularity. The
basic's of this is to take care in your methods, know just as you would
in life - the character of who your associating with, and your motives.
If your interest is in building your reputation, client perceptions,
and value, your focus should be on providing the best information,
knowing your market and providing them tools and resources to make
using or visiting you the ultimate user experience.
